400 fish factory jobs at risk

The recently introduced extra taxes on fish farmers are a heavy burden to companies like Bakkafrost.
“These taxes undermine the foundations of our activities, and they have severely affected our competitiveness on the international market,” says Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jacobsen.
“As things stand, up to 400 workers at our Glyvrar factory may be out of a job after 1 January next year. It is a very unfortunate situation.”
This, he adds, is because it is no longer profitable to create special salmon products, and Bakkafrost is considering only selling whole salmon from next year.
Trade minister Høgni Hoydal has been reluctant to comment on this matter, but he says the government is working on a solution.
